Mis-En-Scene: American Sniper (Bar Scene)

For this assignment I took the role of the makeup and wardrobe designer. As a costume designer it is my job and responsibility to make, design, and create the costumes the actors will wear in each of the scenes of a movie. This job has a lot of importance to a film because a good or bad costume could make or break a film, such as the outfits that Jennifer Lawrence wears as Katniss Everdeen in The HUnger Game series. As well the job of the makeup designer is to make sure that the actor looks the part of the scene he or she is trying to complete. That may include the over seeing of Fake blood, wounds, cuts bruises, and scars.
For the movie American Sniper, Luisa Able was the makeup department head. She has worked on other films such as Inception, Interstellar, and the Dark Knight, ( she must have a pretty good relationship with Chris Nolan). For the Wardrobe Director Mustafa Alyassiri Was the Head Advisor. It was fairly easy to decide what type of costumes Bradley Cooper what wear through out the movie mainly because the movie is based on a true story. Much documentation and research went into the types of clothes that Chris Kyle would actually wear in his life. An interesting fact is that Cooper was given a pair of shoes that Chris actually wore in real life, and wore them through out much of the making of the movie, and as far as I know still wears them from time to time today. As Far as the look of Cooper for the Film he decided that we desired to be as much like Chris as possible and put on 40 lbs in order to look as bulky and large as possible. For the particular scene of Chris in the bar after returning home from his tour, a phone call takes place. In this scene we decided to dress Cooper in an civilian outfit that made it seems as though Chris Kyle had been home for more than a couple hours. rather than have Chris still in his uniform as though he had just got a plane and stopped at the bar on the way home. We wanted it to have a feel that Chris had made an intentional decision to not return home to his family. In addition it is a significant outfot because it resembles the idea that Chris will now be a civilian rather than a solider, and that he is trying to accept that role, which he obviously has some emotional issues with as you can see in the scene
